Important Visitor Information and Updates for 2023

Nationality and Heritage Rooms

  • The Nationality and Heritage Rooms are located on the first and third floors.  Not all of the rooms can accommodate accessible mobility devices. 

Nationality and Heritage Rooms Visitor Center and Gift Shop 

  • There will be welcome tables to the Holiday Open House at the Bigelow and S. Bellefield entrances.  
  • Visitors may also stop by the Nationality and Heritage Rooms Visitor Center near the Fifth Avenue entrance should you have any questions or would like to browse the gift items we have available.  Purchases support the educational programming of the Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Exchanges Program.  

Elevators:

  • The Cathedral of Learning elevators function by touch screen outside of the elevators.  You must use the touch screen to push the number of your floor destination before getting on the elevator, and the screen will tell you which elevator to board.  There are no floor number buttons inside the elevators. 
  • Please note that the Holiday Open House activities are limited to the first and third floors of the Cathedral of Learning.  Guests can access restrooms on the ground and third floors.  The other floors in the Cathedral of Learning are not accessible to the public during the Holiday Open House.  

Restrooms:

  • There are restrooms on most floors of the Cathedral of Learning except for the 1st floor, where the main activities of the Holiday Open House will occur.  
  • Restrooms are located on the Ground floor (G), 2nd floor, and 3rd floor.
    • The ground floor (G) has the most restroom options, including single-use family restrooms off of the hallways with changing table.

Cash / ATM:

  • While admission is free, most of the committees will be selling items on a cash-only basis.  Visitors are advised to bring cash.
  • A PNC Bank ATM is located on the Ground floor (G) of the Cathedral of Learning, towards the back or Heinz-Chapel side of the building, across from the Cathedral cafeteria (which will be closed).
  • There is also a nearby PNC Bank at Fifth Avenue and University Place.

Bring Your Own Bag(s) or Buy a New Cathedral of Learning Tote Bag in the Nationality and Heritage Rooms Visitor Center:  

  • To promote sustainable practices and to align with the City of Pittsburgh's plastic bag ban which was instituted on October 14th, 2023, we encourage visitors to bring your own bags (pr purchase a bag at our Visitor Center) for the gift and food items you may want to purchase and take home with you.  The Nationality and Heritage Rooms Visitor Center on the first floor of the Cathedral of Learning will be selling cloth tote bags with an image of the Cathedral of Learning.  We will discourage the use of a single-use plastic bags or non-recycled paper bags.
